Game 1 showed the team's ceiling, not the finished product

I'm writing this the morning after the first game of the Montreal Canadiens' series against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Montreal leads 1-0, and Juraj Slafkovský just decided the game with three power-play goals. The game-winner came 1:22 into overtime. It was his first playoff hat trick and the Canadiens' first playoff hat trick since 2014.

He entered the series off the best regular season of his career: 82 games, 30 goals, 43 assists, 73 points, a +9 rating, and 15 power-play goals. Between the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, he increased his production from 51 to 73 points. That's a 43 percent increase - not just a cosmetic change.

The hat trick makes the headlines. For the upcoming season, the message beneath it is more important. Slafkovský no longer needs to prove that he can decide a big game. He must prove that he can replicate the same quality of movement, timing, and finishing against different defenses - and even when his body isn't at its freshest.

Baseline: Numbers Without Romance

After four seasons in the NHL, we no longer evaluate just talent. We evaluate trends, roles, and efficiency. The raw numbers show that his growth has accelerated, particularly on the power play and in the slot.

Average ice time has increased by only about seven percent over the past two seasons, but point production has risen by 43 percent. Most of this growth, therefore, did not stem solely from more ice time. It resulted from better finishing, better positioning, and a stronger role on the first power-play unit.

The NHL EDGE snapshot as of February 18, 2026, shows that physical tools are no longer the main question mark. The question is how often he can translate them into the right decision.

Five Things That Need to Happen by the 2026-27 Season

1. Functional strength without sacrificing the first three steps

The goal of the summer shouldn't be a number on the scale. Given his profile, it's important that strength improves stability during contact, stickwork in front of the net, and the ability to regain possession of the puck - without sacrificing acceleration and agility. The weight room is only valuable if the results are visible on the ice.

In practice, focus on the first five meters, repeated sprints after a short rest, and situations where the puck remains under control after contact. If weight or strength increases but these three indicators decline, the program is heading in the wrong direction.

2. PP1 as a hybrid, not just one role on the ice

Game 1 showed why he cannot be confined solely to the role of a player in front of the net. His value comes from moving between the net front, the slot, and the circle. When he first draws the defense inward and then steps out into open space, he creates a shooting opportunity for himself and a lane for his teammates.

On the first power play, he should be a mobile threat, not a static screen. The key will be how many touches he gets in the inner slot, how many times he sets a screen or deflects a shot, and how quickly he moves into the next scoring position after a rebound.

3. Off-puck movement: converting speed into timing

Maximum speed is just the hardware. A first-line winger creates a large portion of his scoring chances by arriving at the back post half a second early, opening up the middle lane, or immediately occupying new space after a pass. Off-season training must therefore combine the first step, reading the game, and precise route selection - not just sprinting.

When he had 101 bursts over 20 mph after 57 games, speed was no longer a hypothesis. The next step is timing: a middle-lane drive with a controlled entry, a weak-side arrival at the back post, and an immediate return to the danger zone after a pass.

4. Exiting the defensive zone under pressure

The next level doesn't start with the next shot. It starts with the puck against the boards in your own zone when the opponent sends two forecheckers. What makes the difference is scanning before receiving the pass, the first touch into open space, and the timely choice between a controlled exit, a short support pass, and a safe chip.

Under pressure, a winger has four basic responses: a controlled exit, a short pass to the middle, a chip past the first wave of defenders, or shielding the puck with his body until another option opens up. The mistake isn't choosing the simple solution. The mistake is choosing it too late or without assessing the pressure.

Slafkovský has the size to protect the puck and the speed to break away from pressure. Once he improves his first touch and decision-making along the boards, the first line will spend less time defending and more time attacking a disorganized defense.

5. Consistency under fatigue must translate into leadership

The 2026-27 season will consist of 84 games. With such a heavy schedule, conditioning is not just a test of endurance. It is the ability to maintain decision-making quality in the third period, finish shifts correctly, and handle the details even after contact.

The benchmark isn't just maximum speed in the first period. What matters is whether he can replicate it in the 58th minute, whether his shift lengths remain disciplined, and whether he can make his next decision just as quickly after a hard hit.

Leadership doesn't start with a speech in the locker room. It starts with your teammates knowing what they can expect from you when the score is 2-2 in the 58th minute. In 2004, I was the center on the fourth line of the championship-winning Tampa Bay Lightning, with defensive responsibilities. Our value didn't lie in the fact that the entire team played only defensively. It lay in the fact that we had to carry out our role without overlooking a single detail.

2026-27 Projection: Three Scenarios, Not Just One Promise

Four seasons and an evolving role are too small a sample size for a robust predictive model. It's more reliable to work with scenarios based on points per game, health, role on the first power play, and the new 84-game schedule.

HockeyIQ scenarios are based on the 2025-26 pace, an 84-game schedule, and maintaining a role on the first power-play unit. They are not a team projection.

My baseline range is 33 to 37 goals and 82 to 88 points. The lower limit represents a pace of approximately 0.98 points per game, which is about ten percent above the 2025-26 season. The upper limit requires an approximately eighteen percent increase in pace. That is challenging but achievable.

The two additional games alone will add less than two points at his current pace. Therefore, most of the improvement must come from higher efficiency and a greater volume of quality shots on goal. With a shooting percentage of around 16 to 17 percent, the 33-to-37-goal range would require approximately 200 to 230 shots, or the same volume with a higher proportion of shots from inside the slot.

Third contract: cap share is the deciding factor, not the headline figure

Slafkovský's current contract is worth $60.8 million over eight years, with a cap hit of $7.6 million from the 2025-26 season through the 2032-33 season.

With a salary cap of $95.5 million, his cap hit accounts for 7.96 percent. With a cap of $104 million in the 2026-27 season, it will drop to 7.31 percent, and with a projected cap of $113.5 million for 2027-28, it will fall to 6.70 percent. The same amount thus gradually becomes less expensive for Montreal relative to the team's cap.

This is crucial for Montreal: if Slafkovský reaches 85 points with a cap hit of $7.6 million, the club will get first-line production while keeping its cap hit below 7.3 percent. This is the type of contract that creates room to retain other core players.

The exact amount of the contract in 2033 cannot be accurately calculated today. The salary cap, the market, and the collective bargaining agreement will all change. The 2026-27 season will therefore not determine a specific amount. However, it will begin to establish evidence of what percentage of the team's salary cap Slafkovský will eventually be able to justify.

Risks That Could Derail the Projection

Scoring regression. In the 2025-26 season, he converted 16.7 percent of his shots. Better scoring opportunities account for part of the growth, but shooting percentages naturally fluctuate. Thirty goals therefore cannot automatically be considered a guaranteed floor.

Role on the first power-play unit. Power-play production is sensitive to time, lineup, and teammates. Fewer touches in the slot can result in fewer points, even with the same individual skill level.

Health and workload. A long regular season, the playoffs, and the international schedule increase the importance of recovery. An injury to the shoulder, knee, or back doesn't just affect the number of games played. It alters body contact, shooting, and the first step.

Poor strength optimization. Gaining weight without transferring that strength to skating can slow initial acceleration and increase the energy cost of each shift. The right goal isn't to be bigger. The right goal is to be stronger without losing speed.

Final Thoughts: One Gap, One Metric, One Change

After a career spanning exactly six professional leagues, I know that a good offseason isn't about answering ten questions at once. It's about resolving one or two issues that the previous season revealed as the biggest obstacles.

Juraj doesn't need advice from me. Before the summer, I'd tell him only this: don't look for a new identity. Make the one you showed in Game 1 a consistent one. A hybrid power-play threat, off-puck movement, and quality decision-making under pressure are three areas that can turn a 73-point season into a new standard.

A good plan, therefore, won't have ten priorities. It will have three: maintain speed during strength training, expand power-play versatility, and improve the consistency of decision-making in the closing minutes of games. Each of these can be measured, and each can be reviewed after a month - both on video and in the data.

If a 14-year-old forward from Liptov - who skated this morning on home ice at the JL Arena, the Winter Stadium in Liptovský Mikuláš - is reading this, the message is the same. Don't add ten random exercises. Pick one gap, one metric, and one habit that you know you can do better in a month.
