AHL .887, Olympics .908, contract $850,000. The Maple Leafs will now test whether he can turn his strong stretches into consistent professional performance.
Minnesota closed that chapter. Toronto didn’t offer him certainty, just a clearly defined opportunity.
From UFA to Toronto
After two seasons in the Minnesota Wild organization, Hlavaj’s entry-level contract expired without a qualifying offer. As a UFA, he signed a one-year two-way contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 3, 2026. His NHL cap hit is $850,000, his AHL salary is $200,000, and his guaranteed amount is $250,000.
Two days before the signing, Toronto traded Dennis Hildeby to Tampa. Hlavaj’s arrival therefore makes sense from a sports perspective: The Leafs bolstered their goaltending depth with a low-cost contract that carries no long-term risk. This isn’t a promotion to the NHL. It’s a paid tryout.
Toronto didn’t sign a proven NHL goaltender. They bought themselves a year to thoroughly evaluate him.
| Contract | NHL cap hit | AHL salary | Guarantee | Status 2027 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 year, two-way | $850,000 | $200,000 | $250,000 | RFA |
Figures excluding marketing
| Competition | GP | GAA | SV% | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iowa Wild 2024–25 | 36 | 2.85 | .904 | First full AHL season |
| Iowa Wild 2025–26 | 22 | 3.28 | .887 | Record 7-11-4 |
| 2026 Winter Olympics | 5 | 3.56 | .908 | Slovakia 4th place |
| 2026 World Championships | 5 | 2.63 | .873 | Record: 2-3-0 |
The most important correction is simple: .932 was not the final Olympic result. The official tournament record after five starts is .908 with a 3.56 GAA. In Iowa during the 2025–26 season, he had a .887 save percentage; the year before that, it was .904.
The difference between these numbers doesn't allow for a simple verdict. Hlavaj has shown that he can handle a big game. Toronto needs to see if he can maintain the same level of play week after week. Public AHL shot-quality data of the necessary quality is not available, so it would be dishonest to generate xGSAA accuracy that the sources do not provide.
What Toronto Will Really Be Evaluating
In the August depth chart, Sergei Bobrovsky and Anthony Stolarz are listed in the NHL, while Artur Akhtyamov and Samuel Hlavaj are among the non-roster goalies. Hlavaj’s first challenge, therefore, is not to secure the Maple Leafs’ starting spot, but to earn a significant share of starts with the Marlies and demonstrate readiness for a call-up.
| Factor | Question for scouting |
|---|---|
| Rebound control | Will the first save end the play, or will it create a second chance? |
| Lateral Movement | Does the player cross the axis without losing balance or depth? |
| Post-save recovery | Does he return immediately to a ready position? |
| Puck handling | Does he make the right decision under pressure on the first pass? |
| Consistency | Will his technique remain the same even in the third game of the week? |
Without shot-quality data, .887 is a result, not a definitive verdict.
The Next 12 Months
The three goals are clear. Earn playing time. Bring seasonal performance back to at least .904 from the first AHL season. And be able to step onto the ice after being called up without changing technique or decision-making.
| Step | Goal | Measurable indicator |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Starts with the Marlies | A significant share of the workload, not just a short hot streak. |
| 02 | Consistent performance | A return to at least .904 and fewer technical fluctuations. |
| 03 | Call-up readiness | Consistent decision-making and technique even under NHL pressure. |
Cam Talbot made his NHL debut at age 26, Antti Niemi at 25, and Niklas Bäckström at 28. Age 25, therefore, is not too late. It is the window during which potential must be transformed into consistent professional value.
A Mentor’s Final Word
Development isn’t about waiting for the next chance. It’s about correcting mistakes every day before they happen again. Toronto gave Hlavaj one year. Neither an Olympic memory nor a single poor performance will determine his future. What matters is what he can consistently deliver in March just as he did in October.
