A full day isn’t automatically a quality day. It’s only a quality day when each block prepares the player for the next one.

A Full Schedule Can Be Deceptive
The previous installments addressed what happens to test results, how feedback reaches the athlete, and what remains of performance under repeated stress. The next question is broader: does the entire day create the conditions necessary for individual training sessions to deliver their intended value at all?
The model schedule at Vierumäki combines, in a single day, a morning warm-up, ice time, the weight room or individual physical training, meals, education on nutrition and recovery, another ice training session, swimming or a sauna, and an evening of rest. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the schedule includes two on-ice sessions; between them, the type of workout, the environment, and the demands on the player’s attention vary.
At first glance, this is evidence of intensity. In reality, it is a test of coordination. If every coach focuses solely on maximizing their own session, a player may complete a high-quality ice session, a high-quality gym session, and high-quality recovery — and still have a subpar day.

The Most Value Can Be Lost Between Training Sessions
A training block has a clear beginning and end. The transition between blocks is often neglected. Yet it is precisely there that it is decided whether the previous work will support the next one or diminish its quality.

The Same 24 Hours, Two Completely Different Systems
The following example is illustrative. It does not evaluate a specific camp participant. It shows why two groups with the same number of hours on the ice and in the weight room may not achieve the same level of development.

Four Decisions That Turn a Schedule Into a System

International recommendations for elite young athletes emphasize that performance development must be healthy, safe, and sustainable, and that training, developmental, psychological, and social demands cannot be managed separately. Organizing the day is therefore not merely a logistical service surrounding training. It is part of the training decision-making process.
A Meal Is Not a Break. Recovery Is Not a Bonus.
A young athlete grows, learns, and trains simultaneously. Sports nutrition at this age should not be a competition in supplements or a copy of a professional athlete’s diet. Expert guidelines for adolescent athletes emphasize a diet that supports athletic performance as well as healthy growth and long-term habits.
At Vierumäki, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and an evening snack are an integral part of the program. Education on nutrition and recovery strategies is woven into the training blocks, and swimming and sauna sessions have designated times in the schedule. What matters is not only the content of these activities but the message they convey to the player: recovery is not something to be done only when there is time left over.

Sleep Is the First Block of Tomorrow’s Day
The model schedule calls for quiet time every evening at 10:00 p.m. This is an important cutoff, but the time itself, on paper, does not guarantee quality recovery. After evening practice, a player must finish eating, take care of personal hygiene, pack up their gear, clear their mind, and create the conditions in which they can fall asleep.
The expert consensus on athletes’ sleep notes that there is no one-size-fits-all figure and that sleep needs are influenced by age, training load, training schedule, travel, and individual response. A more recent study of elite adolescent athletes also demonstrated a link between sleep, stress, and recovery, as well as the need for better education on sleep, nutrition, and recovery.
For a coach, therefore, a more important question than “Was he in his room by 10 p.m.?” is: Did he create the conditions throughout the evening to ensure that tomorrow’s performance can be restored?

A One-Page Schedule for the Entire Day
You don’t need another 20-page report to coordinate the day. All it takes is one page where coaches, players, and — in the case of youth — parents can agree on what the day is meant to achieve and what could derail it.

Evidence That the Day Functions as a System
- Everyone knows how to prioritize. The fitness coach, the on-ice coach, and the player all understand what needs to improve by the end of the day.
- The order follows a performance-based logic. The most important session isn’t placed where there’s a free hour, but where it can deliver the highest quality.
- Transitions have an owner. If there’s a delay, meals, recovery, and preparation aren’t automatically cut first.
- The next coach is aware of the previous situation. The player doesn’t start each block as a new, isolated case.
- The player knows what he is in control of. They don’t wait for a reminder at every step, but at the same time, they don’t make decisions that belong to the coaching staff.
What I’ll Be Testing in Vierumäki
- whether coaches can identify one main priority for the day and explain how each session supports it;
- whether the order of ice time, weight training, education, and recovery is based on the player’s desired condition — not just on logistics;
- whether meal times, travel, and recovery windows are preserved when the schedule is adjusted, or whether they are the first to be cut;
- whether the second training block receives information about what the player has already completed and how he responded to it;
- whether the player understands their specific role in the program and can fulfill it without constant supervision;
- whether the following morning involves evaluating what was actually accomplished the previous day.
When I played in the NHL, performance didn’t start with a warm-up. It began with how I handled travel, nutrition, activation, preparation, the game, post-game recovery, and sleep. No single component could replace another. It could only support or undermine what was to follow.
A young player doesn’t need to copy an adult professional’s routine. He needs to learn the same principle: every decision made throughout the day has a subsequent consequence. A professional habit isn’t formed by an expensive procedure. It’s formed when a player understands why one block is followed by a specific move that protects the next one.
